Akiyama district exists between Niigata pref. and Nagano pref. The district is included in the 100 mysterious lands of Japan. It is hard to access in winter season even today.

Suzuki Bokushi (1770-1842), who wrote “Hokuetsu Seppu”, visited Akiyama district at the age of 59 and recorded his journey in “AKIYAMA KIKOU”. The travel writing was not published in his life time but the piece of summary could be read in “Hokuetsu Seppu”.

In the document, the life of local residents is described vividly and his colourful illustrations must have amused readers who did not know the far snow country.

There is his autograph manuscript of “AKIYAMA KIKOU” in Ojiya city. The manuscript of “AKIYAMA KIKOU” is designated as one of cultural properties by Niigata pref.
