“Long, long ago, it was the age of tranquility. One day, one of gods living in the world of heaven above the sky wanted to get down to the human world but no means of climbing down to the earth. A wise man in a village thought of a good idea. He made a building for the god at the highest place of his village and grew a young cedar plant beside it. The cedar plant got higher and higher. Finally, it reached to the gate of the gods’ world. The god could come down and go up by the high cedar tree and has been blessing the people in the village since then. The villagers have been protecting the building and the cedar tree.”

We often see a high cedar tree as a sacred tree beside a shrine. “SENRYUU JINJYA NO OOSUGI” is one of them. The height of the tree is about 25m and the circumference of the trunk at the eye height is about 6.65m.

“SENRYUU JINJYA NO OOSUGI” is designated as one of natural treasures by Ojiya city.
